Anthropic Just Made Its AI Coding Assistant Autonomous by Default. Here's Why That's a Big Deal
Starting August 14, Anthropic made a feature called Auto Mode the default setting in Claude Code, its AI coding assistant, for Pro, Max, and Team users. Enterprise customers can still opt in manually for now, but the direction is clear. Instead of asking a human to approve nearly every file edit or command, the AI now just acts, and only stops to ask permission when it decides something looks risky.
That might sound like a small settings change. It is not. It is one of the clearest signals yet that AI companies are ready to trust their own systems to work independently, and they have the data to back it up.
What Actually Changed
Here is how Claude Code used to work. Every time the AI wanted to edit a file or run a command, it paused and waited for you to click approve. That kept things safe, but it also meant you could not hand off a big task and walk away. You had to babysit it.
Auto Mode flips that. A built-in classifier reviews every action the AI wants to take. If the action looks safe, it just happens. If the classifier flags something as irreversible, destructive, or outside your project's environment, it either finds a safer way to get the job done or stops and asks you directly. If it keeps hitting walls, it falls back to manual approval automatically.
The Part That Should Grab Your Attention
Anthropic ran a controlled study with over a thousand paid users to test whether this was actually safe. The results were not close. Human reviewers caught dangerous commands only about 14 percent of the time. The AI's own safety classifier caught 89 percent of those same dangerous commands.
Why such a big gap? Because most people were not really reviewing anything. Anthropic found that developers approved 97 percent of permission prompts, which means the human checkpoint had basically become a rubber stamp. People got tired of clicking approve and stopped paying attention. The safety net everyone assumed was working had quietly stopped doing its job.
On top of that, teams using Auto Mode produced roughly 25 percent more output, since the AI could keep working through longer tasks without stopping for permission every few minutes.
