Generative Engine Optimization: getting your business recommended by ChatGPT

For twenty years the game was simple. Rank high on Google, get clicks, get customers. A whole industry grew up around it called SEO.

A new game is starting next to it. More people are asking ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI answers for recommendations instead of scrolling a page of links. When someone asks an AI for the best option in your category, you are either in the answer or you are invisible. Getting into that answer is what people are starting to call Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for a ranking. GEO optimizes for a recommendation.

With search, the user still does the work of comparing results. With an AI answer, the model does the comparing and hands the user a short list, sometimes a single name. So the bar is higher. You are not trying to be on the page. You are trying to be the answer.

That shifts what matters:

  • Clear, factual statements the model can quote with confidence
  • Content that directly answers the real questions people ask
  • Consistent information about who you are, what you do, and where you operate
  • A reputation the model can see through reviews and mentions across the web

The pieces that actually move the needle

You do not need tricks. You need to be legible to a machine that is trying to give a good answer.

Say what you do in plain language. Models reward clarity. A page that clearly states the service, the industry, and the geography is easy to surface. A clever tagline that hides the actual offering is not.

Answer questions the way people ask them. When your site directly answers the question a customer would type, the model has something clean to pull from. Vague marketing copy gives it nothing to work with.

Be consistent everywhere. Your name, location, and category should match across your site, your listings, and your profiles. Contradictions make a model less confident, and a less confident model is less likely to name you.

Structure helps. Clean headings, real answers, and structured data give a model reliable anchors. It is the difference between content a machine can parse and content it has to guess at.

Why local businesses should care most

If you serve a specific area, GEO is a gift. National competitors with huge budgets cannot be the local answer for every town. When someone asks an AI for the best option near a specific city, a clear local presence can win over a bigger company that is spread thin.

That is the same reason local SEO worked for years. The AI version is just earlier, which means less competition for the businesses that move now.

The bottom line

GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is the next layer on top of it. The foundation is the same: be clear, be consistent, and genuinely answer what people ask. Do that and you are not just ranking on a page. You are becoming the recommendation an AI is confident enough to give.
