Google's AI Agents Can Now Work for a Week Straight. Here's Why That Changes Things

Google Cloud just made a change that sounds technical but is actually a big deal for how businesses will use AI going forward.

Google expanded general availability of its Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, the toolkit companies use to build AI agents that do real work instead of just answering questions. The headline feature is called Agent Runtime, and it lets an AI agent run continuously for up to seven days on a task. Not seven minutes. Seven days.

Alongside that, Google gave each agent its own identity, its own credentials, and a permanent log of everything it does. Think of it like giving a new employee their own keycard and email address instead of having them share a login with everyone else in the office. That matters because it means businesses can finally hand agents real access to real systems, with a paper trail, instead of keeping them locked in a sandbox.

Google also showed off a related agent called Gemini Spark that can operate a real web browser on your behalf. It can log into accounts, use saved passwords, and handle multi-step tasks like booking a property viewing or lining up flight options, then hand control back to you when it's time to actually pay.

Why this is a bigger deal than it sounds

Up until now, most AI tools businesses use are conversational. You ask a question, it gives you an answer, and the interaction ends. Useful, but limited.

What changed here is the shift from "AI that answers" to "AI that works." An agent that can run for days means it can:

  • Monitor something continuously, like inventory levels or compliance checks, instead of only when someone remembers to ask
  • Work through a multi-step project on its own timeline, checking in only when it hits a decision that needs a human
  • Keep making progress overnight, over a weekend, or while your team is focused on something else

And the identity and audit trail piece solves the problem that's been holding a lot of business owners back from trusting AI with real access: not knowing what it touched or why. Now every action an agent takes gets logged under its own name, the same way you'd track what an employee did in your systems.

What this means for a growing business

You don't need to build any of this yourself, and you probably shouldn't try. But the shift matters because it changes what's realistic to automate.

A year ago, "AI agent" mostly meant a chatbot that could answer FAQs. Now it means something that can run a process for you over several days: qualifying leads, following up on quotes, checking in on open invoices, or working through a backlog of tickets, all while leaving a clear record of what it did and when.

For a growing business, that's the difference between AI being a nice-to-have widget on your website and AI actually taking work off someone's plate. The businesses that get ahead here won't be the ones with the fanciest tool. They'll be the ones who figure out which repetitive, multi-step process in their business is worth handing to an agent, and who set it up with the right guardrails from day one.

That second part is the part people skip, and it's the part that actually matters. An agent with days of runtime and real system access needs clear boundaries: what it can touch, what it needs a human to approve, and what gets flagged for review. Get that right and you've got a system quietly working in the background. Get it wrong and you've handed access to something nobody's watching closely.

The takeaway

AI agents just grew up from quick assistants to systems that can work on their own for days at a time, with the tracking to prove what they did. That opens the door to automating bigger chunks of your operations, not just answering questions. The businesses that win with this aren't the ones who adopt it first. They're the ones who build it with the right limits in place before they turn it loose.
