Runway Just Built an App With No Code Behind It. Here's Why That's a Big Deal
Every piece of software you've ever used works the same basic way. A developer writes code. The code sits on a server or in a browser. When you click a button, that code runs and decides what shows up next.
Runway just broke that model.
The company announced Solaris, which it calls the first "Interface World Model." Instead of writing code that a browser or app then executes, Solaris generates the interface itself, frame by frame, in real time, as you interact with it. You click a button and the AI doesn't run a script to show you the next screen. It generates a new frame that reflects what you just did. There's no HTML, no CSS, no JavaScript running underneath. The image on your screen is the application.
It's built on top of Runway's video generation technology, which already understands how one frame should logically follow another. Solaris adds a feedback loop so the model responds to clicks, drags, and voice commands instead of just following a prompt.
Right now this is a research preview, not a finished product. Runway is working with early partners and hasn't released pricing or a public launch date. Text rendering still has issues and there's no screen reader support yet, so this isn't ready to replace your website tomorrow. But the idea behind it is what makes this a genuinely big story, not just another incremental model update.
Why this matters even in preview form
Software has always been built the same way. Someone designs it, someone else codes it, and then it stays fixed until a developer pushes an update. That process is slow and expensive, especially for small and mid-size businesses that don't have a dev team on staff.
An AI that can generate a working, interactive interface on the fly points toward a future where:

You probably aren't going to swap your website for an AI-generated one this year. Solaris is early, limited to 720p, and still has real gaps. But the direction matters more than the current version.
For years, the barrier to building a custom digital tool has been cost and dev time. If interfaces can eventually be generated on demand instead of hand coded, that barrier gets a lot smaller. A business that couldn't justify hiring developers for a custom customer portal, an internal dashboard, or an interactive quote tool might soon be able to get something functional built in days.
